RNDM Presence in Sylhet: Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM) had been rendering their service in Sylhet Division since 1937. Four Sisters came to Sylhet to provide pastoral care in the Government owned hospital there. The Sisters involved themselves in supervision of the nursing staff, overseeing the cleanliness in the wards, checking temperature charts and seeing the cleanliness of the surroundings. Sadly political unrest and violence associated with India and Pakistan becoming an independent nation, the Sisters were not able to continue the work, so they left the hospital in 1964.

Sreemangal is called the Little Country, the Queen of Tea. It was then in 1972 when CSC Fathers invited the RNDM Sisters to share the mission of Tea gardens and Punjees in greater Sylhet District. It was then under Dhaka Diocese.

Sisters worked in the tea gardens and punjee schools by making schedule with the Parish Priests. Sisters lived with the people sometimes for one week or two weeks continually when the needs arose and gave them all round education. We had 35 Primary Schools which are still continuing. After finishing primary education, most of the children drop out from their study as they can not continue further study due to financial difficulties.

Sisters lived at the Church campus about 24 years. After discernment, the Province Leadership Team (PLT) decided to have a separate place and a house to live and work from there. The school and Convent are now situated at Dab Bari Lane, Habigonj Road in Sreemangal. It is 2 kilometers away from the Parish Church. The Sisters shifted from the Church compound in January, 1997.

So, the dream of opening school came true on the 6th January, 2002 with 15 students. Sister Monica Gomes RNDM is the Founder and first Headmistress of Saint Martha’s School. She worked untiringly to bring up the school as the best school in Sreemangal.

Pope Benedict the 16th declared Sylhet as a new Diocese in 2011. Most Rev. Bishop Bijoy N.D’Cruz OMI is the first Bishop of Sylhet Diocese. As we are under Catholic Church, Bishop is the Head of all the Institutions. St. Martha’s School is oblized to abide by the Diocesan Rules and Regulations as well as RNDM Education policies.
